เพื่อศึกษาแบบแผนของจุลินทรีย์ในระบบทางเดินอาหารซึ่งรวมทั้งแบคทีเรีย ไวรัส โปรโตซัว และรา ซึ่งมีผลต่อสุขภาพของมนุษย์และสัตว์ทั้งในแง่ประโยชน์และโทษ จากนั้นประยุกต์ใช้ความรู้จากการศึกษาเพื่อนำไปใช้ทำนายการเกิดโรคในกลุ่ม NCDs ในกลุ่มประชากรไทย หรือ ประยุกต์ใช้เป็นอาหารเสริมสำหรับสัตว์
